Volkswagen Polo Overview
The Germany based auto-giant has rolled out the refurbished Polo with a few substantial changes both inside and outside. The Polo has always been regarded as a smartly styled vehicle, owing to its European looks and solid build quality. As known, the company offers this hatchback in both petrol as well as diesel guises. Both the fuel trims have three similar variants – Trendline, Comfortline and Highline followed by the performance-oriented GT variants in petrol and diesel trims, respectively. Prices too have been revised, keeping existing market sentiments in mind. The exteriors have not undergone any major changes, Volkswagen has simply updated the looks of the grille and the headlamps for the facelift.
Volkswagen Polo Exteriors
Exterior looks have not changed much, and the family identity is still very much there. At the front, the new honeycomb grille houses the Dual-beam headlamps with cornering lights for illuminating the roads during the night. The company has toned down the usage of chrome in and around the front grille, which makes it look more sporty than before.Book Volkswagen Polo test drive in Bangalore at Tryaldrive.
The all-new front bumper, which compliments the design and houses the fog lamps. The Polo also benefits from slightly tweaked alloys and body-coloured door handles which blends in quite well with the overall design. The design of the tail-lamp cluster remains unchanged. Every change done to the exteriors, as mentioned before, are very slight and will only be noticeable to the practised eye.
Volkswagen Polo Interiors
Polo interior comes with solid build quality with a number of features. The driver gets cruise control, front arm-rest, electrically adjustable and foldable rearview mirrors and the seat is height-adjustable for extended comfort and convenience. The steering wheel has been given a flat bottom for a more engaging drive. The dual-tone dashboard is also premium looking along with the all-new centre console. There are silver-coloured elements all around which help liven up the interior. The instrument cluster consists of tachometer, speedometer, odometer and trip meter. The centre multi-function display comes with a monochrome display which is much more soothing to the eyes.
The infotainment system comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink. The touchscreen infotainment now also offers voice commands via the button on the multi-function steering wheel and Volkswagen Connect application. This connectivity suite helps with driver behaviour, location sharing, monitoring of fuel cost, trip tracking and statistic tracking. The Polo has tons of space inside for the front cup holders, bottle holders and sunglass holder. The centre console also has a 12V power socket to charge your Smartphone and a parcel tray to keep your stuff.
Volkswagen Polo Performance
The Polo GT has a higher strung 110hp/250Nm, 4-pot diesel engine. Currently, it is available in BS-IV trim, but a BS-VI version can be expected too. The engine is sufficiently refined but at revs above 3,500rpm, it is audible. This 5-speed gearbox is slick but isn’t as some other cars in the segment. This being said, the clutch is on the harder side but then not as much as what it was before. The clutch travel action too is a tad snappy and you got to be a bit careful in traffic.
We loved the Polo driving experience. While the power delivery is very linear at the bottom end, there is a surge of torque as you cross 2,500rpm. You get a small shove in the back as the Polo’s engine pulls with gusto. It is also decently free revving engine and even at lower speeds, too many downshifts aren’t called for. In the two days of testing, the car gave us a mileage of 15.5kmpl which is a mix of city as well as highway runs. VW though claims 20kmpl fuel efficiency.
Volkswagen Polo Riding
Acceleration is seamless and there are three driving modes to select from on the gearshift – Drive, Manual Drive and Sport. In Drive, the gear shifts are automatic, and there is a slightest time lag between pressing the accelerator and feeling the car move forward. Because there are 7 gear ratios, when you are engaged in Drive, the car keeps the transmission in the highest possible gear to conserve gas, so in some instances, when you are on a steep hill, the car takes time to pick up power because it needs to downshift. In sport mode the revs are obviously much higher so you don’t feel any lag at all, and the acceleration is sublime. We missed the paddle shifters on the Polo but then again that would have added to the overall cost of the car.To know more info on Volkswagen Polo check Kmindia
The suspension setup has also been adjusted to accommodate for the heavier weight and also so that it can handle the power put out by the Polo GT TSI. It is a tad stiffer though and on bumpy roads you do feel the kick-back of the suspension. On the highway at very high speeds the car is very well planted and there are no vibrations at all and hence is fun to drive. The electronic steering is light and the input needed is minimal so driving effort is conserved. Its brilliant on road and fast when the opportunity shows itself.
Volkswagen Polo Safety
European car manufacturers never skimp on safety, and this is more than evident in the Polo, which now comes with dual front airbags and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) as standard. The braking system comprising of ventilated discs up front and drum in rear wark fairly effectively. Additionally, there are 3-point front seat belts, 3-point rear outer seat belts, lap belt in the middle, speed-sensing auto door locks, fog lamps and many more features to ensure maximum safety of the occupants. Moreover, there are rear parking sensors and speed alert system too.

Volkswagen Polo Verdict
At an ex-showroom price of Rs 9.9 lakh, the Polo GT TDI doesn’t offer the best value for money considering that modern rivals like the Elite i20 or Baleno offer far more for less. Age is catching up with this car and from what we hear, VW is planning an all-new Polo specifically for the emerging markets like ours, based on the MQB AO-IN platform. This should be out sometime next year. Coming to the present Polo diesel, it is a nice car to drive and the ownership experience has been enhanced with a five year warranty as well as three free services and a lot of other value adds. Dealers too are throwing in discounts as well as festive season offers of up to Rs 1 lakh. If you want an enjoyable car to drive in this segment, the current-generation Volkswagen Polo it is.
