Renault India may be a relatively young brand but because of well thought-out mass market products like the Duster and the Kwid doing well, they have managed to roll on the right path and gain a respectable market share. While the Kwid continues to sell in strong numbers, keeping Renault India in the small car game, the brand is struggling in the crossover space, what with the Duster feeling the heat from newer rivals. Anticipation is high, then, and the style-heavy Captur needs to punch above its weight to do well in the premium crossover segment which includes the hot selling Hyundai Creta and the impressive Jeep Compass.
Renault Captur Look
As looks are subjective, the crossover design of the Captur may not fascinate the onlookers at first glance. One needs to spend some time with the car to form a rapport with the edgy design. The Captur isn’t that tall and traditional boxy SUV, but there isn’t an iota of doubt that it looks like a premium vehicle. The different colour shades, especially the dual-tone shades that the car can be availed with, adds to the novelty factor and grabs eyeballs.
While people may have opinion that the curvy design lends it a compact look but the fact is Captur is the longest and widest vehicle in its class and poses a good road presence. The most striking angle to view the car is the front where you will find all-LED headlights, low mounted daytime running lights and swooping turn indicators. What add more to the French flair is the 17-inch alloy wheels which looks classy and upright under the flared wheel arches. Adding to the ruggedness is the sculpted cladding with chrome strip in the middle while the sloping roofline gives the car a squat stance.
Moving to the rear profile, the car tries hard to shrug off the image of younger sibling Kwid. The wraparound taillights get LED treatment and splits into two sections with one in the tailgate section. The company says LED pilot lamps are arranged in such a way to display the ripple effect but the size should have been bigger. The spoiler is nicely integrated above the windshield while the wiper is adequately sized and covers large portion of the area. The large chrome plate with Captur embossed is similar to what we have seen in the Duster and the rear camera protrudes out from that badge only.
Renault Captur Comfort
Access to the car would be a different experience altogether. The Renault Captur features sleek credit-card styled key having all the necessary buttons, unlike the bulky key fob we are used to. This is the same access card key which Renault has been using in its cars Koleos and Fluence. Once you hop onto the driver’s seat, the very first thing you will realize is that the seating position is a bit on the higher side. It seems you are towering over the dashboard and even if you are not seeing the low-set nose, the view is certainly commanding.
The seat cushioning is stiffer as compared to cars such as Duster. But that’s actually a good thing as you won’t feel tired over longer journeys. The seats snug you in place comfortably with ample support for the side and the lower back. Where the seats allow you adjust it for height, reach and angle, the steering wheel only comes with tilt adjustability. But still you are able to get into comfortable driving position. However, if you are taller than you will find your knees rubbing with the centre console while the haircut brushing against the roof lining. It’s because the dash has been crafted with a prominent, bulging centre console.
The design which flows effortlessly from door to door need to be appreciated as it lacks no-frills styling unlike Creta or S-Cross. Relatively, Renault Captur looks more upmarket than the siblings Duster and Terrano. There is a nice balance of the colour palette which incorporates mix of black, white and rose gold. The dashboard also features nice texture finishing which gives a pleasant feeling on touch, although a proper-soft touch would have made it more splendid.
Jumping into the rear seats is a bit difficult due to lack of wide opening. But once you are on the backseat, you would hardly have any qualms. And despite the rising window line, you will not feel besieged or snowed under, rather the tall seating position makes you feel more comfortable. Two six-footers can sit one behind the other with ease while the rear row can absorb three adult passengers but their shoulders will rub with each other’s. Moreover, the 390L of boot space though is sufficient but not the biggest in its class. The good thing is that the opening of the boot is quite wide and you will not feel problem in piling up luggage. Now coming to the tech and gadgetry, the French automaker has added plenty of them including push engine start/stop, cruise control, illuminated cooled glove box, LED ambient lighting, fully automatic temperature control and rear cooling vents. The car also features automatic headlamps, auto wipers as well as touchscreen infotainment as there in Maruti S-Cross.
However, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment isn’t that great as it resembles the unit currently employed in Renault Kwid. The graphics and colour combination also looks quite similar and though the touch response is better than the Kwid, the display screen is a bit sticky to use. And the downside is, the infotainment also misses on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which even cars like Hyundai Santro offers. However, the Arkamys tuned sound system with front and rear speakers with 2 tweeters gives you amazing output. The infotainment is further equipped with USB, Aux-In, Bluetooth and Smartphone Voice Support.
In terms of practicality, there are several storage spaces including cup holders in front console, front seat back pockets, rear arm rest with cup holders, front and rear door map pockets, rear parcel shelf and dashboard smart storage. There are also some great design touches in the form of butterfly-shaped instrument cluster which has been provided a nice shade by the dashboard. The instrument cluster incorporates huge digital speedometer in the middle, flanked by analogue tachometer and the fuel gauge. The MID provides information such as distance covered, average fuel consumption, trip distance, average speed, distance to empty and distance travelled among others. Overall, Renault has done a nice job with Captur and there is a lot for the first time buyers in the segment.
Renault Captur Gearbox
On the road, the Captur could be best described as ‘comfortable’. More on that later… Now we ought to make it clear that the India-spec Captur is quite different from the one sold in the Europe. The Captur that we will be getting is based on Renault’s MO platform for emerging markets, which is why the brand has stuck with the tried and tested 1.5-litre K9K diesel motor. That being said, there is a vast difference in the way the Captur and the Duster behave on the road.
The Captur and the Duster share the same 1.5-litre 110bhp/240Nm diesel motor, however, the refinement levels are world apart. The Captur is significantly quieter on the move thanks to better insulation and a less noisy motor – one can hardly hear the diesel clatter once the windows are up. What’s more, the Captur also accelerates in a more linear manner than the Duster when the motor is on boost. For those who are wondering, there is still some turbo lag under 2,000rpm, post which the Captur pulls strongly till 4,500rpm or thereabout. The motor’s got enough torque lower down the rev range to propel the Captur through traffic without ever feeling like it needs to be worked too hard. To our surprise, even the clutch feel is different compared to the Duster – it’s more precise and not as heavy either.
Like the Duster, the Captur simply devours bad roads and manages to hover across giant potholes without unsettling itself. Yes, it is slightly stiff when compared to the Duster but the trade-off to this is better high speed poise when driving over undulated roads. Perhaps the most impressive bit is the way it rebounds quickly from any sharp bump you might encounter, regaining composure almost immediately. The only minor downside though, is the amount of noise that filters into the cabin. Over coarse-chip surfaces the interior plastics rattle a little too much and overall there’s some noticeable wind noise, too.

The suspension is slightly on the firmer side as compared to Duster and what does this mean is that Captur would feel better at corners. That said, the stiffness in the suspension will keep the passengers composed on highways, but in city driving the small road imperfections would be heard and felt. However, it overall handles the roads quite well and most bumps aren’t jarring except some sharp ones.The steering gives nice feeling and seems planted on the highways. But in city premises, the owners will find it quite heavy and at corners the kickback is strong. So, as a crossover, the car isn’t much comfortable to drive as other vehicles such as Creta. Put simply, the Captur is an interesting car. At first, it looks like a generic crossover but as you get closer its European design elements stand out and you realise that there is nothing quite like it in this segment – both the Creta and the Compass carry traditional crossover design cues.The real question here, though, is whether the Captur advances the crossover game forward for Renault. It’s certainly improved over the Duster in many key areas including engine refinement, gearshift quality, cabin ergonomics and ride quality. However, it trails behind its rivals when it comes to interior quality and drivetrain options. Renault, then, have got to play their pricing card right to regain some momentum in the crossover segment.
