Erstwhile Maruti Suzuki is one of the most trusted brands when it comes to automobile manufacturers in India. Its performance, reliability and cost effectiveness is the biggest selling factor for this Indian home grown manufacturer to the point that the recently launched Celerio is a buzz in itself. Positioned aggressively, Maruti Celerio was pitched in the market as a technologically advanced small car with an automatic transmission thrown in to add variety to its model range and give consumers something to cheer about considering that traffic snarls are becoming an increasing concern for an end user. On that note, CarDekho recently got behind the wheel of a Celerio automatic to determine its potential in an increasingly demanding segment.

The latest product from Maruti is in a completely different territory as compared to its predecessors A-star and Estilo. Based on the A-Wind concept, which was displayed at the Thailand Motor Show, the hatch gets an eye-catching design. The front of the car is dressed up with flowing back-shaped headlamp cluster, a large headlight unit with separate barrels for the parking light. The headlights come up with good luminance. The larger air dam with horizontal bars merges with the grill. The curvy front facade flaunts two chrome strips running along the grill decently.

Similar to the exteriors, the interiors too are not very appealing but are purely functional. The Celerio’s interiors however are a big improvement from that of A Star as the plastic quality feels better and the interior trims feel more secure.

Since we sourced the most low on features LXI variant for our interiors bit, we could not get to see the goodies Maruti Suzuki offers on its high end variants. Features like audio and telephony controls mounted on the steering wheel are truly impressive. While LXI and VXI offer basic features, ZXI also gets a music system. Even the ORVMs can be electrically adjusted in the ZXI while the VXI gets manually adjusting mirrors.

It has a spacious cabin and offers great headroom too for taller passengers. The legroom too is impressive for front row and rear row passengers. Spacious cabin has to be the main attraction inside the Celerio’s cabin. All four seats come with an integrated headrest hinting cost cutting measures but then are not evident. Seats are decently cushioned and are ideal for in city traffic.

It has a generous glove box, twin cup holders on the central console as well as provision on door pockets for mundane stowage. Even the boot is a generous 235L which eventually translates into easy luggage storage.The Celerio does not disappoint when it comes to interiors. It feels in sync to its popular siblings like the Swift and Ritz. The interior trim qualities have gone higher considerably and it also appears to be a well knit package than before.

Focusing now on the most interesting part of this test is the power plant that breathes under its hood. Christened as K10B, the Celerio features a 3 cylinder all aluminium 998cc petrol engine that is capable of producing a maximum power output of 68 PS with 90 Nm of torque. In simple terms, this might come across as an ordinary unit however with a 5 speed automatic transmission thrown in the experience promises to be a nice one. How is that? Well, Maruti claim to have developed some interesting technologies to help attract perspective consumers with elements such as an Auto Gear Shift and Drive-By-Wire Technology. Theoretically, the Auto Gear Shift mentioned over here comprises of an electronic control unit that utilizes a precision hydraulic actuator to control clutch engagement and gear shifts. This system ensures that the gear and clutch operations happen at optimal timings thereby providing a better fuel efficiency of a manual transmission despite it being an automatic.

Unlike all automatics, this one does not feature a park mode rather it has a neutral therefore one needs to be aware at all times to use the handbrake while parking otherwise there could be a rolling disaster. Drive-By-Wire Technology is yet another feature that aids in providing better torque delivery and more responsive drive.

All accounted for, Maruti Celerio does reasonably well when it comes to Indian road conditions. Its pick up is linear to the amount of acceleration however if pressed really hard then the power plant goes into a frenzy thereby screaming its heart out loud with an average increase in speed. The Auto Gear Shift works in tandem to provide decent shifts. The ride quality is pretty good as the hatch can go over broken roads without much of an adieu; a ground clearance of 165mm further extends the reach. Bearing a turning radius of 4.7 meters it is fairly easy to maneuver through congested roads and park in really tight places.

As for fuel efficiency of the automatic version, one would say that if in auto mode the numbers aren’t really impressing but the moment you go into manual they seem to provide a decent average which in our case went up to 16 kmpl with a mix of highway and city driving. However be advised, if the car is pushed really hard the fuel efficiency drops to 10-12kmpl as this is a tiny engine which has to work really hard to achieve triple digit speeds. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio has only one engine option – a 998 cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that puts out a modest power of 67 bhp. The power output might sound underwhelming but it is more than sufficient for city commutes and daily drives, essentially the type of driving that this car is designed for. Maruti Suzuki has taken the old K10 engine out of the Alto and made a whole bunch of modifications to it. The resultant of all that work is the K10B engine and it is a significant improvement over its predecessor.

This engine has good power and is reasonably silent at the lower end of the rev range, but at higher revs, it does get rather loud. The aspect of the car with the highest amount of hype surrounding it is the new 5-speed automated manual transmission, which Maruti Suzuki refers to as “EZ Drive.” This gearbox can be thought of as a regular automatic gearbox, in the sense that there is no clutch pedal and the selector lever looks very similar to a conventional automatic transmission; however, it differs because it uses electronically-controlled hydraulic actuators to shift up and down through gears. This provides for effortless driving and no matter how jammed up the roads are, you can navigate through them like a breeze.

Should you consider Maruti Suzuki Celerio? It has been priced at Rs.3,96,607 for the LXI (ESR – Mumbai) and Rs.5,03,816 for the ZXI Optional Package (ESR Mumbai). Just by doing a price comparison, Hyundai i10 comes real close to the Celerio as it is priced between Rs.4,01,231 to Rs.4,80,028. Hyundai i10 might seem more appealing in design to some but then the Celerio takes the lead with Automated Transmission.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is not a car which would create lot of excitement with its design but then it is a very functionally practical car. EZ Drive is not just a marketing jargon but indeed very convenient in real time conditions. The Celerio also changes the traditional ‘automatic comes at a premium’ thinking. It gives mass market consumers a fair shot towards automatic cars which by itself is brilliant.

Convenience of a clutchless drive, low maintenance because of simple construction and high fuel effeciency are the pivotal points for the Celerio. In addition to that it comes from Maruti Suzuki, a brand which knows India like no other car maker.
